GL.iNet makes some pretty amazing routers. The Slate, in particular, is worth its weight in gold. This award nominated router has been recognized for its cybersecurity and personal privacy centered design, and it’s very affordable for the luxuries it offers. One additional perk of the GLi Slate is that it can easily be turned into a VPN WiFi repeater, without the need for cables or complicated installation. This versatile powerhouse of a router will deliver above and beyond what its users need, and it’s surprisingly simple to do.
An Overview of the GLi Slate
The GLi Slate is a tiny little guy. It’s very unassuming to look at, and its capabilities exceed what it appears to be capable of at a glance. It’s equipped with two small antennas, 3 GB ports, a microSD slot for shared network media, and a switch designated to turn the VPN on or off. This switch is the most important – be sure your VPN is on before you set up your WiFi repeater, or that will defeat the entire purpose.
Set Up Your Router in WISP Mode
WISP mode will allow your GLi router to act as a VPN WiFI repeater. When you connect to any WiFi network with your VPN router, WISP mode creates a LAN protected by a firewall and puts clients on another subnet with a separate LAN segment. Everything is completely segregated from the source network and connected through your VPN, providing layers of security.
To Set up WISP mode, log in to your router. Select the “repeater” option, and then click “scan.” The router will begin searching for all available WiFi networks. Once you find the network you’re looking for, select that network. Input the password and click “join.”
If you’re using a public free WiFi network, you should only need to validate your connection once. Every other device you connect through your GLi VPN router will be allowed.
If you’re going to be connecting in that location often, your GLi router will allow you to save your preferred WISP networks. This is helpful if you travel to the same place for work often or if you frequent a specific coffee shop. The best security practice is to only safe trustworthy networks that you use frequently. Everything else can be established for one time use.
WISP Mode Speeds
Since the GLi Slate is a dual band router, it’s going to be much faster than using WISP mode on most other routers. Single band routers will struggle to share the available bandwidth between the tasks at hand. You need bandwidth for the repeater and you need bandwidth for your devices – a single band router is going to seriously divide that bandwidth. A dual band router will allow you to successfully connect multiple devices to the repeater without a significant loss of speed. The 2.4Ghz band will act as the repeater, and the 5GHz band will serve your devices.
The GLi Slate VPN router is one of the best tools in a traveler’s arsenal, especially if you’re a traveler with multiple devices. It will keep you safe on shared WiFi networks while allowing you to use your laptop, smartphone, and even your Amazon Fire Stick securely from a hotel room without a significant sacrifice in speed. WISP mode is a lifesaver for the tech enthusiast on the go.
