VPN routers are important devices that provide house-wide or business-wide VPN security. When you have a VPN router online, everything that connects to it has encrypted internet and either anonymous or VPN IPs. You can protect corporate or personal information, get around IP or geo-restrictions, and much more. However, one thing that stops a lot of VPN users is that it can be a bit tricky to setup a VPN router. With PrivateRouter, we not only flash the routers we sell ourselves, but now we have an automatic setup tool that makes using a VPN router even easier!
The PrivateRouter application is for users that want an easy way to manager server settings for single or multiple routers. One of the best parts about VPN routers and DDWRT software is the customization. But with the PrivateRouter application, you can forego manually copy pasting scripts, or entering settings, and instead you can update your DDWRT VPN router from the app. Here’s how to do it.
Step 1. The first thing you need to do is allow SSH on your VPN router, but in order to do that, you need to enable “Secure Shell” or “SSHD” on your DDWRT admin web interface. You can find this by going to the “Services” tab in the top navigation. From here, scroll down to the bottom where you will see “Secure Shell” 4 or so options from the bottom. Enable “Secure Shell” by clicking on the button and then click “Save”, followed by “Apply”.
Step 2. Now that you’ve enabled “Secure Shell”, go to the “Administration” tab, and go to the “Remote Access” category. From here, click on the bubble to enable “SSH Management”. Now that you’ve enabled SSH properly, you can now use the PrivateRouter to upload settings to your VPN router. It works via SSH.
Step 3. Launch PrivateRouter. From here, we want to create a new VPN router profile. Click on the “+” icon on the top right portion of the app.
Step 4. Next, enter in the VPN Router Name. Feel free to pick any name you want. Now, enter in your DDWRT’s router’s IP address. The default should be something like 192.168.1.1. Now, pick your firmware (whether DDWRT or otherwise) and the model of your router.
Step 5. Now, pick the connection protocol “SSH”. From here use “root” as the login and enter in your Router’s password. The default password should be something like “admin”. You can also change the password in your router’s settings by going to the “Administration” and “Router Management” subtab.
Step 6. Now you need to enter in your VPN credentials. Pick your chosen VPN from the “VPN Provider” area, and then after that, enter in your VPN username and VPN Password. This will be the credentials you receive when signing up for a subscription to your chosen VPN, usually in an email.
Step 7. Make sure the information is correct and click “Finish” at the bottom. Now, you will go to the main page for your selection, and you can pick the server location, or even enter in a dedicated IP address and port number. Click “Enable VPN” and you are good to go! IF you want to check if your VPN router is working, go to this page.
